Surprisingly Creepy Songs: Halloween Week

Hello Angels!

Here’s the thing: I do a Halloween playlist every year, and I’ll be doing one again this year (though a more detailed one of why the songs are on there). But, I wanted to do a small list of songs which I personally find creepy after you actually think about them. As usual, songs will be linked and the playlist will be on my Spotify for awhile too.

Every Breath You Take- The Police
Have you heard this? If you have then it’s gonna be 0 surprise that this is on the list, it’s like a stalker. I don’t get the romantic element from it- great song but it’s not one to listen to on your own walking at night.
“Every step you take,
Every move you make,
Every breath you take,
Every smile you fake,
I’ll be watching you.”
It’s bloody creepy. It’s stalker-ish. I get that it’s supposed to be romantic and it’s classed as one of the most beautiful, romantic songs ever, but it’s creepy.
“Oh can’t you see, you belong to me, how how my poor heart aches, with every step you take.”
Fuck off Sting, you’re not gonna get them if they’ve got a restraining order against you.

Who Can it Be Now?- Men at Work
Okay, this is incredibly catchy, I love Men at Work and I do like the song, but let’s be honest: it’s creepy. Can’t listen to it on my own because I feel as if I’m being watched or someone is hiding behind my door.
Who can it be knocking at my door?
Go ‘way, don’t come ’round here no more,
Can’t you see that it’s late at night?
I’m very tired, and I’m not feeling right…”
I don’t know why, but it does give an unsettling kind of tone for me, and it should be played at more Halloween parties.

Heavy in Your Arms- Florence and the Machine
Love Florence, and you’ll find a few songs of hers scattered on playlists over these few days, but this fucking song is creepy. Here for it and her vocals that transcend what you’d expect for a human being.
“I was a heavy heart to carry,
My beloved was weighed down,
My arms around his neck, my fingers laced at crown,
I was a heavy heart to carry,
My feet dragged across the ground,
And he took me to the river, where he slowly let me drown…”
I mean, yeah, you can go into the fact it might be her falling in love and how he carried her through it and she’s drowning in love but really, let’s face it, it’s about fucking murder. Plus was on the Twilight Eclipse soundtrack which is an ace soundtrack even if I struggle watching the films now.

Blood// Water- grandson
This is a bop and I love it, shout out to Riverdale for featuring it because I’ve loved grandson for awhile and the recognition is deserved. It’s on the list because there’s a chilling tone to it which kind of puts me on edge, and at the same time, fucking wish I wrote it.
“We’ll never get free, lamb to the slaughter,
Whatcha gonna do when there’s blood in the water?
The price of your greed are your sons and your daughters,
Whatcha gonna do when there’s blood in the water?”
I mean, catchy, but chilling and is my current aesthetic. If you haven’t listened to it yet, do it and check out his other stuff too.

Problems- Lil Peep
I wasn’t sure whether to put this on in case it came across as disrespectful, especially after his passing early this year (condolences to family and friends), but there is an element of this that makes me genuinely uncomfortable. I’m not a huge fan of his music, but this song really stuck with me and does have an impact.
You know I got my problems,
Know you got yours too,
Hold on to my revolver,
They ain’t looking for you,
Oh, girl, don’t even bother,
Why she act brand new?
Take what the devil offer,
I got nothing to lose.”
It’s a chilling song and an excellent song, but it makes me uncomfortable listening to it and has since I first heard it.

Strange Woods- Marcus Foster
This song! It’s different from a lot of the songs on here, there’s a big band feel to it, his vocals are raw and panicked, it’s a perfect song to me personally. It has a similar message and story to Blood// Water by grandson, but handled in a completely different way.
It’s taking all the air so that you can’t breathe,
The hands above the open,
It’s written on the back of a dead man’s stone,
It’s bothering the neighbors,
It’s moving to be trouble in this side of town…”
That’s just part of the first verse, and is does have a threat to it, almost a warning. His vocals are INCREDIBLE on it, so please listen, he’s a incredibly underrated artist

Bad As Me- Tom Waits
Okay, Tom Jones covered this and it’s just as uncomfortable which should tell you this is definately lyrically a unsettling song.
You’re the head on the spear,
You’re the nail on the cross,
You’re the fly in my beer,
You’re the key that got lost,
You’re the letter from Jesus on the bathroom wall,
You’re Mother Superior with only a bra,
You’re the same kind of bad as me,
You’re the same kind of bad as me.”
I mean, come on. To me, the fact that someone is as bad as Mother Superior in only a bra is terrifying. I’m not usually a Ton Waits fan, but this song has always fascinated me because of it’s ability to put you on edge. Then Tom Jones covered it and I loved it more- bloody love Tom Jones.

In The Middle of the Night- Within Temptation
I love Within Temptation and unpopular opinion, but The Unforgiving was my favourite album of theirs, which this is from. There’s dark themes to a lot of the songs on the album, but these caught my attention.
“I’ve been walking this road of desire,
I’ve been begging for blood on the wall,
I don’t care if I’m playing with fire,
I’m aware I’m frozen inside,
I have known all along.”
Between the vocals, the mass of sound and the lyrics? There’s something sinister in a way, but it’s still so beautiful.

Control- Halsey
This one I’ve always found so beautiful but still makes me uncomfortable, still puts me slightly on edge. I think the use of it in trailers for horror, the use of the lyrics in fan art- they stick with you. Mix that and the rhythm in Halsey’s voice and her range?
I’m bigger than my body
I’m colder than this home
I’m meaner than my demons

I’m bigger than these bones
And all the kids cried out,
“Please stop, you’re scaring me”

I can’t help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?
I had to include more lyrics on this one to give the impact, but you get my point? Mix all the elements together and it is creepy, but the best kind.

Mad Hatter- Melanie Martinez
Okay, I’m not a huge Melanie Martinez fan, but I’m a huge Alice in Wonderland fan so I had to give the song a go and I loved it. It’s as dark as Alice in Wonderland is, but more twisted. I think it’s the mix of her sweet vocals and the character she’s created and the lyrics.
We paint white roses red
Each shade from a different person’s head

This dream, dream is a killer
Getting drunk with the blue caterpillar
I’m peeling the skin off my face
‘Cause I really hate being safe
The normals, they make me afraid
The crazies, they make me feel sane…”
You see? Painting rises with blood? Peeling skin off your face? Not a nice, sweet song. Though, not a fan of calling people crazies, can’t get on board with that.

So there you have it: 10 songs with kind of disturbing and creepy lyrics. Hope I’ve not ruined any songs for you.

Stay safe and stay spooky Angels ❤️
